It is the same as when a checkout closes in my local supermarket
(Waitrose). The sign put out to tell customers not to join the queue
states "Checkout Closing" and if someone does attempt to join the queue
or start putting their goods on the conveyor, the checkout operator or
supervisor will say "Sorry Sir/Madam, I am closing. Please use another
till". They do not say "closed" while they are still serving.
Moreover, Alex has confirmed that the store may legally serve
customers up to 30 minutes after the stated closing time. So anyone in
the store *before* closing time should expect to be served within the
period of grace.
Next time you see a customer being served at a checkout that says,
"closing", get in line and insist on being served. After all, IYO the
checkout is not closed, and it would certainly not be illegal for you
to be served.
