Yes, I'd agree 100% with your post.

My "state of the art" pc (4gb ram, 2.4 Core 2 Duo cpu) will respond to
nothing for around 20 minutes after booting............the yellow
shield sits there with "downloading updates 0%".

If I bring up task manager as soon as XP has booted (and before it
locks up) svchost.exe sits there hogging 99% of my cpu
resources...........given this is a Core 2 Duo machine, that's quite
an achievement..........Bill gates must be very proud.

As you say, you have to kill automatic updates to avoid enduring this
fiasco.

I'm pretty sure in it's current state, XP isn't fit for purpose.
