I didn't realise you could buy "pavement chalk".
It will be interesting to see how the court will interpret this but
what happened doesn't really enhance police-public relations.
For a long time I've been dismayed by negative attitudes among the
general public towards the Police and the reluctance to assist them.
The police are reaping what they have sown, for taking the political
kings-shilling in the 80's and allowing themselves to be treated as a
political instrument, rather than a public servant.
I first recall the rot setting in with the miners strike, although I
am sure the process started in the 70's.
When even my next door neighbour (who considers the Telegraph "too
liberal") says he has no faith in the police, and would not believe
them or help them out of principle. This was after he called them to
an attempted break in at his workshop (he's a small businessman), and
they seemed more concerned about the tax, MOT and insurance on his
company cars (all of which were in order). What finished it off for
him was when he went to the station with his documents, they had no
record of the call about the break in (he wanted a crime number for
the insurance), but spent 30 minutes filling in the forms for the
cars.
If you want to see what a society that has no faith and trust in the
police looks like, try living in the rural parts of Sicily.
