Is a householder legally obliged to obey a police constable's direction to stay indoors.

My better half was going to church this morning and when she stepped
out of the door, she was told by a policeman to go back inside. It
made her late for the service.
The policeman and his colleague were trying to arrest someone in next
door's garden.
On another recent occasion, a policeman with a torch was searching for
something in my neighbour's back garden. When my neighbour saw the
lights, she went out to ask was there anything wrong but was told to
go in and shut the door.
What would have happened if the two ladies concerned had refused to
obey the constable's directions? Would they have been committing an
offence?
