Are they obliged to provide you with a statement for your rent paid?
Have they a right to charge so much for a reference letter?
Just spoke to a snooty agent for the lettings firm who said she would not
put up with my argumentative attitude and hung up on me when I asked how
difficult it was for her to write a one line letter "all paid up to
date:...."
I said she told me herself she knew I was paid up to date, so I said why
the problem....
She said head office have to write the letter, these "corporates" and
their self made moneymaking laws eh.
Subject access request for £10.

Thanks, thats an interesting angle, data protection request.... if they
can only charge £10 for that how can they claim its a fair price to
charge £20 for a simple one line letter confirming i pay my rent on time
up to this point in time....
£10 is an amount decided by statute.
What if a company pays wages and rent and buys equipment that means
£20 is the cost of writing a letter to you?
Pfffft...
A bank does not charge you for a statement.
A building society does not charge you for an annual statement
why should some corporate franchise lettings agency be able to charge you
for an annual statement.
Because it's not part of the contract.
In any financial transaction/contract it is usual to get a receipt for
payments or annual statement is it not?
You get a payslip with your wages for goodness sake, you trying to tell me
they don't have to give you a wageslip, or a shop does not have to provide
a receipt FOC if asked?
No I am not. I am saying that if it is laid down by law or the
contract you have to provide a receipt or statement. If it isn't you
don't.
Yeah, its always, how well does someone actually know an area of law....
(Isn't ancient Anglo Saxon law still current in a lot of cases...???)
I guess there are several aspects of my problem.
1. Is there law covering "financial transactions" that requires a receipt
or statement to be given periodically.
2. In the absence of any law saying a bill/receipt/statement is required
for a rental contract (or under the umbrella of a "financial transaction")
then is it fair to charge £20 for a reference.
3. Is what I am asking for a reference? or a confirmation of good payment,
or simply a statement? Who defines the term in this case? If I look up
reference and statement on google (define:reference define:statement)
statement certainly seems to match what I require better than reference.
sign their agreement to it?
