Are they obliged to provide you with a statement for your rent paid?
Have they a right to charge so much for a reference letter?
Just spoke to a snooty agent for the lettings firm who said she would not
put up with my argumentative attitude and hung up on me when I asked how
difficult it was for her to write a one line letter "all paid up to date:...."
I said she told me herself she knew I was paid up to date, so I said why
the problem....
She said head office have to write the letter, these "corporates" and
their self made moneymaking laws eh.
They are not under any obligation at all to provide a reference
letter, so it seems that you can either either agree to their terms or
not have a reference letter. In other words, they can charge however
much they like.
Well if the banks can't (TBC) why should some other corporate be able to?
Why on earth do you think the banks can't?
There has been no suggestion whatsoever AFAIAW that any charge the
banks make for references is in any way unfair or unlawful.
why do you call it a "reference letter" as well.
Because that is what it is.
No it is not, a reference is when someone says they know this person and
gives details about them like an employer might require, a statement is
what I require from the lettings agent not a reference.
Well why on earth didn't you say you wanted a statement then?
Which of course will be no use at all, your bank statement will be
just as good for that, since it will show the payments you made.
What you actually want though is NOT just a statement, but rather a
reference - something that says you made all your payments on time and
have not caused the landlord any serious problems.
<snip>
Good grief its only a one line "boiler plate" letter the date can even be
filled in automatically, its a one button press and insert into envelope
job surely....
Probably.
But they don't have to provide it.
It isn't any form of penalty charge, so the proceedings being used
against the banks won't help.
So it really is up to them what they charge for it.
well I thought the consensus was the banks charging £25 for a letter
regarding going overdrawn was overcharging...
You thought wrong.
The "consensus" is that £25 charges for unauthorised overdrafts are
penalty charges, and as such are unlawful if they amount to more than
"liquidated damages".
Nothing to do with charges for "sending a letter".
Fact is its not a reference I am after it is a statement that I am paid in
full up to this point in time, in what way is that a "reference".
It is a reference because it is a statement about you.
you are just another on the gravy train if you ask me,
I wasn't asking you, and where the hell you get that idea from, only
you could ever know.
If tha6t is your normal response to people who give answers you don't
like, you won't find it easy getting answers once you are known.
but then if you are
a solicitor 25 for a letter would be cheap as far as you
cartel/temple/mobsters are concerned eh!
It would.
But then I'm not.
