I've just received a standard "thanks but not on short-list" letter
after applying for a job.
The requirements of this job are not that demanding academically.. I
(in all modesty) am overqualified for it. It is a technician type jobs
and I have degree in that subject (electronics). I also have the
technician qualifications and practical experience though. I can do
everything they ask for in the job spec and have clearly described
this on my CV. Also I also live only a mile away from the place where
the job is.

Oh - btw I'm 56 years old?
So the subject line has my question.

I'm not one to make a fuss or have a source grapes attitude - but this
is a bit mean I thought.

Ok I'll keep looking - but just wondered what the grp thinks?

The potential employer has little defence against any allegations of
discrimination in their recruitment processes unless it is sifting
applicants by objective and non-discriminatory means. Suggest that you
write to them making those points about your complete suitability and
ask them why you weren't shortlisted, as you suspect this can only
have been the result of your age. Depending on their stance when they
reply, you have the option to lodge a claim of age discrimination with
an Employment Tribunal - you could always discuss this with your local
ACAS if needs be. But, as others have said, maybe they're not worth
bothering with anyway......

It's always worth bothering. Even if it doesn't help you, it may help the next
older qualified person. The sooner employers develop a fear of prosecution for
age discrimination the better.- Hide quoted text -

Well-said ! - many employers will continue to act ignorantly /
ineptly / unlawfully unless and until they're challenged about it, so
it is indeed worth doing so

This is very honourable from a perspective of someone who might not *need* to
find a job, but it will not help his position, far from it. The world is not
that simple.
