You are being myoptic by thinking that the gaps were the only factor,
or the main factor in the incident. As Alex has stated, the main
cause was most likely inattention rather than anything to do with
following distance.

But greater gaps would undoubtedly have given a better chance of stopping, no?

If not, then no gaps are going to be sufficient.

What do you consider to be the safe rule then?
