could the OP have protected himself against any possibility of being
successfully sued by prefixing any potentially libellous comments with "i
think" or "in my opinion" ? he would then be making a factually correct
statement - or would the onus still be on him to prove he had valid reason
to 'think' or be 'of the opinion' that the other guy was a 'fraud' or
'scammer' ?

It would help, but it would still have to be an opinion that could
reasonably be arrived at, given the facts he had.

Basically, all I said in the review was that I felt his claims, as
mentioned in the book, were false, and that in my opinion the book was
a scam or fraud, designed to make the author money and little else.

This was done in the context of a book review, and other people also
wrote negative and highly critical reviews of the book in question.
This whole thing seems to be a storm in a teacup.

I'll just wait and see what this guy does and contact a solicitor, if
needs be.

Why don't you name the book and give more people the chance to slag it
off (if it is warranted)?- Hide quoted text -

I don't know how many of those who have replied on this thread are
actually lawyers. From some of the comments I've seen I very much
doubt it.
