There is not much difference between the net income
of a family with a single earner on an average income,
and a family with nobody in work.

I'd like to see your calculations.

Start here: the average salary in the UK is over £23 000.

OK.

Assume 2 parents & 2 school age kids, £23k median income (it's something like that),
typical basic housing costs (either rent or mortgage interest) of £500 a month,
typical council tax of £1400 per year, school meals £7 per week, adult
prescription/dentist charges £50 per year each, travel to work costs £15 per week.

Family in work:

Income 23,000
Tax/NI -5671
Travel to work -720 (48*15)
Tax credits +1481 (8060 - (23000-5220)*0.37)
Child benefit +1516

Net income: £19,606

Family on dole:

Income based JSA: 4685 (90.10*52)
Tax credits: +4075 (CTC only)
Child benefit: +1516
Housing benefit or ISMI: +6000
Council tax benefit: +1400
Free school meals: +532 (7*2*38)
Free presciptions & dentist: +100

Net income: £18,308

So the family in work is about 7% better off than the family on the dole. The earner
works 40 hours a week to be £1298 a year better off, ie their true net income is 62p
per hour. So much for the minimum wage.

Therefore we have far fewer families
with one earner and one full time
parent than the rest of Europe.

Try the high and escalating cost of housing combined with minimal social
provision, so parents have to pay educate their children by moving home,
and pay to entertain their kids, with designer this and that, because
being a family and caring for your children, when you could be out lining
your pockets, is not the done thing in Britain.

The govt encourage it - all their "family friendly" policies centre around
encouraging parents to dump their kids in Ofstead approved childcare while they go
out to work. OTOH their obsession with "child poverty" targets is reducing the gap
between the net income of families with no earner, and families with one earner on a
low-mid income (as above).

But independant taxation and subsidised childcare often means families with two
earners are considerably better off. End result is a sharp divide between families
with no earner, and families with two earners. No other European country has such a
sharp divide - and the govt even admit it. But they can't see that their policies are
to blame...

Pretending we care about our children, by harassing suspected
paedophiles, most of whom have never been inside a criminal court, is the
done thing in Britain. Image counts. Screw the truth.

Ask UNICEF. They did tell the UK. As an American medic told me, and she
was right, "the British just don't care about their children."

True. It really is refreshing to go abroad and see kids actually *welcomed* in
restaurants...
