My landlord, the "TMO" want me to get rid of my washing machine, which
I installed since I was here. According to the admin assistant I'm not
supposed to have one, and she asked me to get rid of it by next week.
However there is nothing in my contract to say I can't have one. Can
they make me get rid it?
What's a TMO? What sort of premises are you living in, what sort of
tenancy
agreement or lease is it,
Temporary accommodation, while I wait for a permanent flat. I have my
own front door, kitchen and bathroom. It's a block of flats. I am
housed ultimately to prevent me from being homeless, so as for the
contract, I'm not sure how it is classified.
what exactly do they rely on in saying that you
are not allowed a washing machine?
No idea. I assume however that it's because they don't want to have to
maintain extra appliances that they didn't install.
Other possibilities would be the noise and vibration, causing complaints
from the tenant below. Or the risk of flooding.
Personally I think in this day and age to expect someone to go without
a washing machine is absurd.
We ought to follow the American example of having a laundry room in the
basement of a block of flats, where everyone goes to do their laundry. Even
Dr Frasier Crane does that, in his luxury apartment block.
