It's a nice house and we look after it well; I was expecting to either
replace the glass or to pay for the damage in due course. it is just
that II was a bit shocked to see how dangerous the glass was and
wondered if it was actually permitted. We will be adding safety film
to the remaining panels.
Get the landlord's ok for the safety film - he might not take kindly
if it is applied inexpertly and without his knowledge.
Personally, though, I would just replace the door outright with one
that does not have glass - you can get solid wood doors for next to
nothing, let alone the moulded cardboard ones. As I say, you might
want to ask the landlord whether he would be willing to share part of
the cost of this.
And once again I'll state that as a rule you are not required to
upgrade appliances, fittings, or furniture as regulations change,
provided they complied (and still comply, obviously) with the
regulations in force at the time of installation.
There are certain additional obligations upon landlords, but I believe
these mainly cover gas installations and the fire safety of furniture
provided by the landlord.
