This is clearly very frustrating, especially since there appear to be no
light at the end of the tunnel. Unfortunately they have a cancellation charge
of £70. If I drop out, they will probably just take it off my credit card.
How can I prevent this?
With difficulty if they have continuous credit card authority. One way
would be to write to them, recorded delivery, copied to your credit card
company, terminating the continuous authority. If they then make further
charges after the cancellation of the authority you could claim these
back from your card company.

Why not report your card as lost or stolen and get it cancelled. They
will find it very difficult to just take it off your credit card then.
