Spent Crimes and Immigrants

I've got a question regarding how the policy the UK has on "spent
crimes" applies to immigrants.

When a crime is "spent", as I understand it, it can no longer be
reported in a background check nor does it need to be reported on a job
application. Here is a link that enumerates the length of the periods
of time it takes particular crimes to become spent:

Now, what I'm asking is this: imagine a United States citizen charged
with a misdemeanor which resulted in a sentence of probation. This
sentence was given just over 5 years ago.

According to my understanding of the above website, had this conviction
occured in the UK it would be 'ignored' or not reportable on a
background check. I would also be free to say "no" when asked if I had
any criminal record. (I know that there are certain professions whose
hiring process is exempt from this "ignorance" about applicants old
convictions.)

Now, 2 questions:
1) Will this misdemeanor, over 5 years old, sentenced in the USA,
figure into my efforts to move to the UK? (I assume yes.)
2) Will this misdemeanor, over 5 years old, sentenced in the USA,
figure into my efforts to get a job in the UK? (I assume no --
excepting those professions listed on the page linked to above such as
health care, child care, and unfortunately for me, the law.)

By the way, I was innocent -- I plead guilty because probation didn't
bother me, I was scared of the system, and I was a naive 19 year old
who thought that the punishment for a crime was the sentence
pronounced, not a lifetime spent subject to the judgements of
uneducated dolts with credit reports and person checks in their hands.
