I built a computer a while back and bought an OEM Windows XP with the

this is legal?
Almost certainly, although whoever sold you the OEM version of Windows
*may* have been acting illegally.
I have since built a second computer, and as I have a crack to disable
Windows Activation, I can run my copy of Windows XP on both machines.
I know this is against Microsofts rules, but would it be illegal for
me to do so?
No, but it is unlawful.
It *is* a copyright infringement.
Unless done in the course of a business, or to such an extent as to
cause significant harm to the copyright holder, that is a civil wrong,
but not a criminal offence.
