Midlands Today have been running a poll on whether someone found illegally
carrying a knife in a public place [1] should get a mandatory 5 years in
prison.

96% said yes!

I really am speechless at the levels of stupidity involved here.
Yes , obviously gang members carrying knives with the intention of killing
other gang members is a problem in some areas and should be dealt with
firmly.
Thats so incredibly far removed from a couple of kids who have taken a
kitchen knife out to play at exploring the nearby wasteground or someone
who in ignorance of the law has a locking knife that they left in their
pocket when going to the local DIY shop: both situations worthy of a
police officer "having a word" [2] , but 5 years in jail???? be real FFS!

Compare that sentence for an offence where there was no harm (and often no
likelihood of harm) to much more serious crimes and there is no parity at
all.

Sometimes I really do despair

[1] Actually the poll was just "for carrying a knife" which is a bit
unfair on someone who has just bought a new cutlery set.
[2] And both situations are ones I dealt with while in the police.

Hows about mandatory 5yr sentences for leaders of political parties, who
needlessly involve this country in US war crimes?.....................surely
a bit more serious than a few idiot chavs with kitchen knives????
