A secretary at work has a nephew who is in his 40's. He has been a
police officer for 22 years. He works in some sort of special squad
presumably in plain clothes, and drives an unmarked police car. One
day last week he went out with other members of his team and had a
drink at lunchtime, then somebody said have another one ...
After leaving the pub he had a minor bump in the car. The police were
called and breathalysed him. The result was positive. He has been
charged.
Assuming he wasn't very far over the legal limit is it likely he will
lose his job? What about his pension ? What about the other members
of his team? (aiding & abetting?).
He certainly should lose his job, as it *should* be an absolute
requirement for a police officer that they do not have a criminal
record. And this *will* result in a criminal record unless he can find
some way to get off it.
Whether it is *actually* a requirement that a police officer have no
criminal record, I don't know.
It isn't.
Minor convictions , especially some time ago are now acceptable though you
would be asked about them extensively in interview.
Convictions while employed generally result in dismissal though motoring
offences are not as bad.
Someone I used to work with was banned for 28 days for speeding while off
duty (102) and had to redo his advanced driving assesment but kept the job
