those situations are not that cokmmon where I drive. My old one lost it
with a clear view of the sky, when it's very cloudy for example.

Cloud should not have much effect, but precipitation lowers the signal
strength considerably (even if the precipitation does not reach the
ground).

That'll be it, I was thinking of very miserable days. Must be a better
aerial - this one has one the size of a 10p coin, but thinner - looks like
one of those tiny piezo speakers. The old one had a 2 inch long .5 inch
wide plastic tube with spiral conductors going round it.

The aerial may be part of it. The newer GPS has probably got a better
receiver, but most likely is that the current block of satellites has a
higher output power (-154 dBm received as against -163 dBm received for the
old satellites).

Unless they changed the satellites at the same time as I changed my GPS, or there are two sets of satellites, and the new GPS uses the new ones, it must be a better receiver.
