Your notice does have to end at the end of a term.

What makes you think this.

This has been discussed on this group many times, and
no-one has ever come to that conclusion before.

I realise that you might well reject this link bit it is all I could
find at this time. I am looking for legislation to back my claim up

from here
http://www.landlordzone.co.uk/notice_to_quit.htm

well it's hardly unbiased.

the regs are here

http://www.opsi.gov.uk/acts/acts1988/Ukpga_19880050_en_1.htm

as amended here

http://www.opsi.gov.uk/acts/acts1996/1996052.htm

It's too much for me to read online

But as I recall, the assumption that there is no
'end of period' rule for the tenant is because the act
seems to be completely silent on this point whereas
it is explicit that it is a requirement for the landlord.

HTH

Is it not the case that be staying on at the begining of a period the
tenant is implying that would like to stay until the end of that period ?

Ambigious, Sorry

I referring to the 'end of a rent period' in a periodic
tenancy (because that is what the OP was asking
about), not end of rental period in a fixed term.

For monthly rental periods, if the tenant gives notice
he is always staying to the end of the current period,
he is just not always completing the next one.
