I have never in my life had any desire to hurt a child. But sometimes
a little hurt is needed in order to prevent a bigger hurt later on.
The newspaper was my ultimate weapon of choice on my children - used
twice on one and once (as described) on the other. Rolling a
newspaper was a signal - it seldom needed to go further than that.
(Worked on the dog, too, but not on the wife who simply rolled her
own). As a schoolteacher, the cane was the only accepted method of
administering corporal punishment, but it was the *threat* of that
punishment that was used to maintain discipline more than its use.

A threat is however of limited use if it is *never* carried out when
challenged, and so I have administered the cane on 3 occasions in 3
years of teaching. Two of those occasions could have been a police
matter instead, and probably would have been in the UK today as there
is no viable alternative.

I used a flat stick (more like a short plank), selected because it
caused minimum pain but maximum noise - punishment being administered
in a back room within earshot of the rest of the class. "Tested" on
the desk a few times whenever its use was threatened always had a
calming influence on an overly boisterous class. Such a technique
will not work if the pupils know that the use of the cane on their
backsides is forbidden.

I once threatened the cane for a minor matter where its use was
completely inappropriate - I had no expectation that I would be called
to carry out the threat. But one child totally unexpectedly (and I
think it must have been deliberate) put me in the position of having
to back down on my threat or deliver the punishment. So I caned him,
as gently as I dare get away with. In retrospect I should have thrown
my hands up and admitted to the class that I had made a mistake.

If used to excess or inconsistently, *any* form of punishment loses
its effect.
