This probably won't be a problem but I'm just getting information
beforehand.

We've just got a letter from the water company saying that there is a leak
in the pipes on our property and we must fix it. However at the same place
that the mains water enters the property there is also a natural
spring/stream which flows out of the wall, and has done since my parents
bought the property 40 years ago.

We suspect that someone has seen the stream exiting the wall and reported
it
to the water company as a leak.

They are coming out on Thursday to investigate, however are we liable for
any works which they will have to carry out to find out if the leak is the
pipes or not? Anything else I should be aware of with regards to pipe
leakage and legal liability?

I think you *know* streams don't flow out of walls don't you?

Yes they do.
There are several in this area where springs sometimes overflow
through walls.. The builders leave holes in the walls for drainage.
