Much less so than the idea that there might be 200,000 CP sites outHow many are then?
there.
IMO, based on over a decade of Internet use, I would estimate that the
average number of publically available CP sites on a given day is less
than one.
Have you gone looking for them? If not, then how can you possibly know
that they don't exist?
I did once look for them in order to discover whether the problem is
real or hype. Same as I would have checked out a local pub if there
were rumours of prolific nefarious activities taking place and I was
not hearing of any prosecutions. I didn't spend a great deal of time
(maybe an hour or so on a dialup connection), but it satisfied me that
they are not available by any of the usual methods. Yes, there are
sites containing natuist images of children, and some with posed
images. There was a University site that contained pornographic
textual stories about children, and even some cartoon images, both of
which were pretty sick to my personal morals - but nowhere did I come
across any pornographic photographs of children.
But mainly, I am pretty certain for the same reason that that I'm
pretty certain that there are no fairies at the bottom of my garden.
I cannot obviously provide proof that they do not exist, but the fact
is that I would have been almost certain to have come across a few if
they exist in any significant numbers for any length of time.
In all the Usenet debates where I have made the assertion that CP
sites do not exist to any significant extent, not a *single* person
has been able to prove me wrong - which would of course be extremely
easy by citing just a single URL.
The other fact is that there have been only a handful of such site
operators prosecuted in many years. It is far easier to trace a web
site than to trace people who download, so if only 1% were caught,
200000 sites would equate to 2000 prosecutions.
Yes, there *is* child pornography (and I mean sexualy explicit)
available on the Internet somewhere, I am quite certain. But the
extent of the problem is nothing like the authorities pretend, and it
is not on pay-per-view web sites. It makes far more money for the
child protection organisations than it does for pornographers, and is
an *excellent* excuse to justify imposing controls on the Internet.
If you spent only 1 hour by yourself searching for these
sites, then yes, your search will less than fruitful. Are
you searching in the right places? Are you entering good
keywords? How much effort are you putting into your search
before you give up? Are you networking with others who may
be searching like you to find if this information has been
uncovered by someone else who had more luck? If not, then
your chances of finding these sites are stacked against you.
So imagine if there were just 2000 other people searching
with you and then networking with you via the numerous chat
rooms. Some may use differing keywords, some may spend more
time searching when you had long given up. Some may chat to
others in the network to find unrelated links, where those
link provide other links to even more information which
could be useful and help lead to a site.
Your pool of information would be vast within the network.
You may not even need to search for the sites as many of the
sites have probably already been discovered by the network.
All you have to do is chat with as many of these people as
possible to find the information you want. Sooner or later
that information will be filtered through the network and
someone will give it to you. That's just how networking
works.
And remember, you spent a mere 1 hour searching. Pedophiles
will be doing these searches on a daily basis and networking
on a daily basis. I think you underestimate the power of the
internet and how really difficult information that can be
incredibly hard to find, is actually not that difficult when
you have others networking with you which helps carry the
workload..
