Re: Counter-surveillance

Is it illegal to use counter-surveillance products in the UK if you
believe the authorities are wire-tapping phones/houses/cars etc?

And what does the law say on any individuals who attempts to remove
them or in any way tamper with their use (presuming of course they have
been lawfully placed there)

It probably all depends. General criminal law would apply, whether there
are specific offences especially 'status' offences related with them I
would not know.

It is probably safe to assume that it would be an offence to interfere with
such equipment that is not on your premises (eg wiretaps at telephone
exchanges, or even telephone junction boxes etc in communal areas of
apartments etc). You should not be interfering with such equipment full
stop - if you have a concern you should contact the organisation
responsible for such equipment.

Issue with surveillance equipment on your premises is more difficult.
Normally you could be charged with respect to it if you intentionally
removed or disabled such equipment if you knew or ought to have known its
purpose such that the equipment was lawfully in place. Possible charges
could be obstructing the police or the course of justice). If you honestly
thought the equipment had been unlawfully placed (viewed objectively) you
probably have an 'out'.

In any case, you would probably need to keep the equipment for a reasonable
period and return it to its owner upon request.

Also, could anybody suggest who the best counter-surveillance companies
are in the UK?

Possibly the usual companies in this field would probably not want to look
for equipment which is likely to be lawfully placed. Boardrooms, senior
managers offices, product development areas, etc would be OK, but they
could be wary in other instances.
