You do not need an expensive piece of plastic to prove who you are.
You
_really_ don't need an expensive bit of plastic that nobody wants
Actually there *are* quite a few people who do want it.
Nonsense. The 52% who claim that they do are ill-informed fools.
Whether they are informed or not, according to the poll they want it.
Ummm. Suppose the government announced a new policy that it called
"Unlimited Free Beer". Asked for more details about it, Patricia Hewitt
replies, "I'm sure this great British people of ours isn't interested in
your typically negative media nit-picking, John. Hard-working families
in Middle England are delighted that the Labour party will give them all
unlimited beer, free at the point of use. Isn't that something to
celebrate rather than carp about?" Opinion polls support her claim; they
show that the population support Free Beer in droves.
When the policy is introduced, it turns out that it will be funded by a
60% basic rate of tax that nobody knew about before.
Did the opinion polls *really* show that the public wanted this policy?
It seems to me not; they were not properly informed of its implications.
Exactly. That was just the point I was trying to get across. Glad
someone else has understood it!
ISTM that where you went wrong was in suggesting that when people reply
'yes' to a question that you would answer with an emphatic 'no', such as
'are you in favour of identity cards?', they don't really mean 'yes' and/or
they are 'ill-informed fools' (as you put it).
WRT that particular question, all we have before us is that 52% of people
replied 'yes'. You appear to think it means something other than 'yes', but
ISTM there is no evidence for your conclusion. Perhaps you are also
confusing the question 'are you in favour of identity cards?' with the
question 'are you in favour of the Government's identity cards scheme?'.
The latter question wasn't asked in that poll.
Now, in that poll there _are_ questions regarding how effective people think
_the Government's scheme_ will be, and whether they think it will cost as
much as the Government says, and these shed some more light on what people
think. Regardless, it appears that some people _do_ want identity cards, no
matter how much you dislike the idea. Deal with it.
Anyone who has not obtained information about the ID card and its
ramifications, yet still participates in a poll is a fool. As the only
official information available to *most* people has been government
spin and propaganda, becoming informed takes a bit of effort.
