I have contacted the manufacturer, who originally offered 50% towards the
cost of parts, around £60, which would still leave me paying about £160.
I
said this wasn't acceptable, and they've since upped the offer to 70%,
around £86. Their alternative offer is a new appliance for £280. I
pointed
out that I bought a new appliance for considerably more than that only 22
months ago, which should not need replacing for a good while yet.
Around two years' use from a fridge freezer compressor is probably about
right these days.
Wehave had two from new in 40 years. The first one lasted a little
over 10 years. The current one was bought in 1994 and is still in use.
I would be very annoyed if someone sold me a fridge freezer for £600
that only lasted a couple of years. If I couldn't get it fixed for
free I would be spreading the word around about what a crap make it
was.
I'm interested in other people's opinions on these offers - do you think
they're reasonable? ...
I think they are being quite generous.
I think you should contact your local trading standards and ask for
advice. It could be your contract is with the supplier but he has gone
bust so you may have no option but to accept the offer or tell them to
sodoff and you will never buy one of their crappy appliances again. A
letter to the MD of the company saying just that should help.
