Broken fridge - Sale of Goods Act

We bought a fridge freezer from http://www.robertsons-online.co.uk/ in May
2004. In the past week the fridge has stopped cooling. We called out the
engineers recommended by the manufacturer, who came yesterday and diagnosed
a failed compressor. Total cost of replacement: £221, which includes
£123.16 for parts, the rest is made up of labour charges and VAT.
The appliance cost £600 when we bought it 22 months ago. Ordinarily I would
contact the retailer and expect them to reimburse the vast majority, if not
all, of the costs, as I don't consider 22 months use out of a £600 appliance
to be a reasonable amount of time. Unfortunately this is not possible
because the retailer appears to have gone out of business (the phone number
on their website, now only a holding page, comes up as 'not recognised').
I have contacted the manufacturer, who originally offered 50% towards the
cost of parts, around £60, which would still leave me paying about £160. I
said this wasn't acceptable, and they've since upped the offer to 70%,
around £86. Their alternative offer is a new appliance for £280. I pointed
out that I bought a new appliance for considerably more than that only 22
months ago, which should not need replacing for a good while yet.
I'm interested in other people's opinions on these offers - do you think
they're reasonable? And legally, bearing in mind my contract is with the
retailer not the maunfacturer, do I have a case against the manufacturer at
all?
Thanks,
Kirsty.
