If I had to cover my tracks with e-gold, thinking this on a
purely logical basis. I would buy my e-gold using cash,
Western Union, or buy an anonymous virtual credit card. I
would then set up 4 e-gold accounts using different aliases
and shift the gold from one account to another, so tracking
it would be harder.

OK, that *pays* for the account. I understand how cash
and other methods can be used to make an anonymous *payment*. It also
makes for an anonymous receipt *if* the seller and buyer deal direct.
Anonymous that is except between the buyer and seller.

Now - the LEA are onto the web site. They pose as customers, and pay.
They have the authority to get a court order on e-gold to release
their records.

Somehow, the money has to get from the customer to the pocket of the
seller. How does that happen without the LEA customer (and its court
orders) being able to trace it? Or will e-gold put cash notes in an
envelope and leave it behind a park bench?

Firstly, were dealing with gold here, not cash. The
transaction between a buyer and seller is done in real gold,
so cash isn't the issue. I can go to a gold merchant and say
I want £50 worth of gold for one of my e-gold accounts. As I
pay by cash, the merchant has no record of who I am, other
than Joe Bloogs They may have a record of my e-gold account,
but that will be useless. I could, if I was really paranoid,
transfer my gold to various other e-gold accounts to make it
harder to trace. Even if it does get traced back to the
merchant, they have no idea who I am.

A web site can also do exactly the same as me when they
setup their e-gold account. They just give the buyer their
e-gold account number and the buyer transfer the gold into
the sellers account and the transaction is completed.

If the buyer is using proper security like onion routing,
no-one can know his true identify. Not e-gold, not the gold
merchant, not even the site operator will know. There is
absolutely no easy way to trace these accounts unless you
slip up and access your accounts using your own IP. You
could even use a net cafe a wifi hot spot to do your
dealings.

If people are involved in illegal activity, they will find
ways to cover themselves as much as possible. And it's not
as if it's that difficult these days with the amount of
opportunities to conceal yourself.
