You do not have to know about the standard to know that there is a
general shortcoming with a particular type of product.

Having had several laptops and one flat screen monitor (which
serves 3 machines) I have never had a problem... but from the
previous discussion I assume that anything I purchase in future
will not adhere to that quality and I should insist on a demonstration
of the actual item that I buy. Since I bought most of this stuff
in Holland I wonder if there are different controls there.

No - improvements in manufacturing standards mean that there is a
higher probability of getting a zero-defect monitor than there used to
be. So you have been lucky, but not surprisingly so.

The first two DVD players I bought were both capable of playing
non-regional NTSC format DVDs by outputting a PAL signal with a 60Hz
frame rate (which my TV can handle). I incorrectly assumed that this
was a standard feature of PAL DVD players even though none of the
spec. sheets mentioned it. The third DVD player I bought, which was a
much higher specification than the first two, reports all my NTSC DVDs
as being "No Play"

The fact that other players had the feature leading me to assume it
was a standard with all players does not mean that I can demand that
*all* manufacturers must provide the feature.
