Perhaps they should review their policies. New Zealand universities
generally make scripts available because Official Information laws require
it (unless the universities can successfully invoke exemptions), and it
does not seem to cause practical difficulties. NZ universiies are subject
to it as they are all effectively Government agencies. AFAIK students can
pay for a photocopy after results are released or can uplift the original
script once review processes have passed deadlines.
Perhaps the release of scripts will ease such problems since students can
3. For my part I regret the modern trend to seek always to challenge the
view of the marker. In the end there is a subjective process of assesment,
and that is the task of the examiner. There is a review process designed
to ensuyre consistency among different Universities, but beyond that the
marker's judgment should prevail.
I frequently have to deal with students who think their mark (not always a
mark awarded by me) is too low. My answer is that this is the judgment the
examiner has reached, and it must be respected. The only exception I would
make is in cases of arithmetical error (and I've seen a few of those)
see for themselves where things went wrong.
For example a schoolmate failed a physics paper (he passed the overall exam)
despite being at or near the top of the class and subsequently obtained a A
pass in first year University physics. He had no apparent difficulty with
the paper and a 'recount' made no difference. It remained a mystery why he
failed but fortunately it did not matter in his case. If at least the
principal and teacher could see the script, the reason for failure would
have become apparent and suspicions allayed.
