When Angus was 21, he confided in a friend for the first time, who
helped arrange a referral to an NHS centre specialising in sexual
deviancy.
This is clearly what's missing from our present-day arrangements - it
should be possible for a person who has not harmed a child to obtain
confidential counselling, without having the whole panapoly of social
services & police accompanying this. It's crazy that we make it
unthinkably dangerous to seek advice at an early stage.
We asked for advice about someone we suspected, instantly it escalated into
a full blown police enquiry. Although nothing physical was done in the
first place, the authorities go in like a bull in a china shop. The suspect
was never charged with anything, and hopefully the fright of it will put him
off any further grooming (which is what it appeared to be) Unfortunately it
might just make him more circumspect.
