Do the readers remember the late Gary Jacobs, the solicitor who gave legal
advice in the Mirror newspaper? What would be your opinion of his advice
in general?
Assuming the Mirror was a long term client, the Mirror must have been quite
happy with his advice. This is especially if he could advise on how to
tidy up a story to minimise the chances of defamation or give advise on how
close the paper could sail close to the wind. The trick in this game is to
set a budget for damages and associated legal costs. If you are below
budget you are probably losing readers to other tabloids, and if you are
well above budget you are being to reckless in your writing. It was this
business model that enable the press to convince the Inland Revenue (via
the courts?) that tort damages could be treated as a tax deductable
expense. If you do not like Mirror journalism you are not likely to have a
high opinion of his advice.
