It has now been discovered that our stockfile is incorrect and a number
of items are missing. I have been told that because I am running the
store at the moment it is my responsibility and I am to be
investigated.
IANAL (and don`t work in a shop either)
When was the last full / verified audit of stock (i.e. independently
verified by at least one other member of staff) - without such a check
the system is wide open to abuse.
Perhaps you could put forward a suggestion that as a national
retailer, stock audits should be done in conjunction with a random
member of staff from another branch - that will help eliminate any
local book-cooking.
I used to work on high voltage equipment, and it was usual to work as
a two-man team - whoever reassembled the equipment would have their
colleague double-check. Not everyone liked to work like this, some
thought it was a "trust" issue, but at the end of the day, its easy
for one man to make a mistake - but harder for two to make the same.
One thing I must add is that I have not knowingly caused the stockfile
to be incorrect (IE Stolen stuff myself).
I`m sure no-one even considered this as a possibility, although
"shrinkage" can be quite a problem in some shops.
Are the missing goods "small", or would it have taken rather more
effort to remove them from the premises ? If deliveries are arranged
from the stockroom, what procedures are in place to prevent the
drivers from helping themselves ? Were the goods missing from the shop
floor or stockroom ?
It won`t be any consolation, but my father in law once alerted senior
management about a "till dipping" by his immediate manager at the
place he worked at the time. He was sacked - along with everyone else
who worked there (it was "company policy" to do a clean sweep in the
event of any impropriety, irrespective of how it came to light).

I too worked for a national retailer, although it was about 10 yrs ago.
Anyway, when the store manager was promoted, there was an immediate audit
(which was the norm) before the new manager had time to get his feet under
the table.
That way, this sort of thing wouldn't happen
.
