Useful if you are a double-glazing salesman, perhaps. If it makes some people happy and does no harm to anyone, it seems a shame to simply ban it rather than make it better.

Leaving aside the philosophical arguments about honours, am I the only one who thinks it stinks that the brave, low-paid workers who personally descended into the horrors get measly MBEs, while the bosses who just did their well-paid jobs from their offices, albeit in difficult circumstances, get CBEs? If ever proof was needed of this current Labour party's attitudes to bosses and workers, this is it.
Tricky to leave aside the basic argument about honours, when discussing who should get what..
The honours system only works because people accept, ie value, them. Good luck to those that do. They deserve them, in every meaning of the word. If the erks accept MBEs, then fine. Presumably the bosses would consider them an insult, so had to be offered more. If the rabble will eat bread, why give them cake?
The highest of the honours went to an "officer and a gentleman" who couldn't even keep his word over such a simple thing as fidelity to his wife... It rather makes the whole system of "Orders of Chivalry" and the like a farce, IMHO.
Am I the only one who things this whole charade is a relic of byegone days of Royal Patronage and best consigned to the history books?
No - you certainly are not !!
I'd like to see the entire honours system scrapped and I am very disappointed that a Labour government has failed to do it.
The most coveted honours are generally given to people who are already successful and admired. It's like an extra gift to them to encourage them to continue paying their taxes in this country.
The OBEs and the MBEs generally serve no purpose. However there should always be medals for bravery, which should go to those who most deserve them (in the military of course, and to those who work in dangerous civilian occupations, and to members of the public who do rather more than whatever comes naturally at the time.).
Medals for gallantry and self-sacrifice? Does a fighter pilot who stays in his aircraft and steers it clear of a village, instead of hitting the button immediately, deserve recognition? Of course. But few get that opportunity and most of the "gallant and brave" behave so year after year, without any recognition. It doesn't seem very fair and more a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Wars are inhumane and politicians shouldn't be able to divert attention from this by passing out medals..
I would just have one medal, one grade, awarded to anyone who dies or suffers a permanent disabling injury in an attempt to save a stranger.
But I would rather not get one, thanks.
