Identity Theft - Credit

Various Mobile Phone/Store Card accounts have been opened using my name and
address.

AIUI apart from the name and address no other genuine details were given.

In most cases these accounts were opened using a bogus bank account for a
direct debit. In at least one case a forged gas bill was used. These details
could have been checked at point of sale.

I have informed the Mobile/Store Card companies that I did not open the
accounts and have advised them to contact the police. I have also asked them
to explain what proof of identity they received when the accounts were
opened.

Most of the companies haven't bothered to acknowledge my letter. One company
has asked that I sign a disclaimer which requires me to divulge a large
amount of personal information. I'm unhappy about this as I have already
clearly stated that the accounts were not opened by me or anyone related to
me. They have made no attempt to answer my question about proof of identity.
I'm concerned that they appear to be more interested in pursuing me for the
money than they are in reporting the fraud to the police.

What protection do I have against them making incorrect and detrimental
entries with credit agencies.

Is there a legal requirement for a certain amount of diligence in
establishing identity?
