Sounds to me like this child had Special Needs. This would explain the
comments about "zombie-like", and might explain why they couldn't bond
with him. It's not unheard of for Social Services to be less than honest
about Children with SEN.
An SEN child is also far more likely to eat things they shouldn't, even if
it's poisonous.
The whole thing is crap whether these people are unpleasant or not. The
crime is implausible (who actually *knew* you could poison a child with
salt ?) and the motive about the perfect family stuff is rubbish too ;
with a "trial adoption" so to speak you can simply hand the child back.
And if they are callous and heartless being so doesn't make them murderers.
Dead child; Social Services *** up ; have to blame someone else,
fantasies to a stupid jury.
