This is a cop-out. To pretend to understand that barnacle geese are fish merely so that one may eat them on Fridays is an act of self-deception.
Almost certainly. To defend them though, most medieval people did believe that the world was created for man's convenience and also believed all kinds of strange things about nature e.g. mice being created spontaneously from laundry. It could be that they considered the "fact" that barnacle geese were fish to be even more evidence of how great God was in providing meals for good Christian folk.
