One morning when there was black ice on the roads many years ago,
someone drove their car through my front wall. It was almost
certainly done by a parent during the "school run". I waited two
days, and having not been contacted, I placed a sign on the remains of
the wall asking for anyone who saw who had done the damage to contact
me. After a further two days (nobody contacted me), I put a cross
through the sign and wrote "Thanks" underneath it.
The driver knocked on my door that evening, apologising for destroying
my wall and making a ***-and-bull story to explain why he did not
contact me sooner.
The guy ended up doing a runner, and I left it in the hands of my
insurance company - I've no idea whether they pursued him or not.
