Welcome to rip off Britain.
Unlike Germany where you can rent very decent accommodation at respectable
rents, here in Britain, landlords are solely interested in extracting the
maximum possible rent and giving as little as possible back in return. The
position is made worse because at any time there is a vast shortage of
rentable accommodation. The practical upshot is that the tennants feel no
obligation to look after the property.
Your situation is entirely typical.
