There is however the question of the liklihood of being caught ...

OTOH it is a simple matter to reset a router to factory defaults and
set up its parameters, which the customer could probably achieve by
hiring a knwlegable youngster & paying very little.

OTOH, uploading a deliberately corrupt firmware update to the router
....
