Heinrich Schliemann found it on objects in Troy and concluded that it was a
specifically Indo-European symbol, which appeared to be supported by its
later discovery on Hittite items. Throughout the 19th century the voelkish
movement established itself in Germany, combining a sentimental patriotic
interest with a back to the land philosophy and, based Schliemann's
conclusions, it adopted the swastika as a symbol of Aryan ancestry. In 1918
a voelkish society was formed under the name of Thule-Gesellschaft, which
was instrumental in the founding of the German Workers' Party, which later
evolved into the NSDAP (Nazi Party). It was via that route that the swastika
became a symbol of the Nazis.
