Is there a "simple" guide to the CSA rules online anywhere? I was made
redundant a few months ago and, after informing the CSA I was given a nil
assesment. Since then, I've taken a few months off and living off my
redundancy money while my current wife continues to work. My only other
personnal income is rental from a property that was recently left to me
which brings in about £500/month. I'm now getting letters from the CSA
demanding to know how I'm supporting myself. As I understand it, her
earnings should not come into the equation. Is this true?

your partners income doesn't matter at all, though they will probably keep asking. way my other half deals with it is to quote the data protection act at them... causes confusion.
I don't think how you support yourself is any of their business there is no law that requires you to work or claim benefits. if your partner is working that is basically it covered.
if you have no income from employment, and you can answer any forms they send you (refuse to speak on the phone) without actually fibbing there is little they can do about it.
as for the rental income, if the agrement is you own the property but your other half is renting it out, well its not *your* income is it?
not whatever you do ensure its all declared correctly to the tax man, since they have powers even the csa dream of.
but as long as no income is in your name there is basically not much they can do. as i said you are not required under uk law to *have* an income.
