Hi,

Just been onto the b******s as my bitter ex has requested a change in the
way I pay my maintenance. I have always paid her the full amount each 4
weeks by cheque in person but she now wants to change this to get the CSA
to
collect it for her. Fine by me but I have one question of the group..

- I have been advised strongly by friends to avoid the DD option and
ALWAYS
plump for the standing order option instead. Which I have done. However
the
bitch I spoke to at dudley spent 10 minutes putting me on and off hold
basically trying to bully me into accepting the Direct debit option
instead.
Phrases she used included "We cannot process S/O's anymore so you will be
in
arrears if you insist.." / "We may have to use a DEO on you then" etc
etc...Eventually I managed to get them to agree to send me a S/O mandate
which I will fill in and hand to my bank next week. She got more and more
infuriated the longer it went on as I deliberately (and with great
difficulty) remained 100% calm and pleasant, even stooping to call her
"love" and speak really slowly.

My Q is tho...why do they try and insist on a D Debit..? Is it true they
can
change it at will and you then have the devil's own job getting your
money
back (if you get it back at all..?)

Also, I am naturally suspicious so any one got any ideas why an otherwise
(fairly) reasonable ex would suddenly do this..?I've just got married so
that may be it although we have been split up for 11 years now so it
seems a
bit bloody strange... Isthe change of collection method likely to make my
life with the b******s harder..?

Finally I am going self employed next year (driving instructor)..what
should
I do about a reassessment and when?

Sorry this was actually THREE questions.

Thanks in advance

She must be insane. You are doing the right thing. Stick with the SO
then sit back and listen to her moan when the money doesn't get through
to her. But Hey! That's not your fault. And, I wonder whether you will
receive the mandate. Did you know you can set up SO through online
banking?

As for Q2, your suspicions are probably correct.

Q3...just inform them of the COC when the time comes and have a look at
their website about being self employed...but things will have changed
by then.Expect a long delay...

I would be grateful if I could ask you a few questions about becoming a
driving instructor. I believe it costs around 2.5K and people usually
fail the third part of the exam ( presumedly to get more dosh out of
you? ). Is the exam quite hard and are you going through a franchise to
start with?

Thanks

First of all thanks for your reply..

to answer your question... Yes it does cost about 2.5k to train to be a
driving instructor (with BSM) this includes the cost of each of your (3)
different tests, for one attempt only at each though (however the instructor
college charge just over 3k and their price does NOT include the costs of
your tests..!!!!) Also with BSM if you pay the whole wack up front (2600
quid) you get 500 quid cash back when you pass your test..

I'm just past my part one so far but from what i gather it IS quite hard to
pass your part 3 first time (though not impossible).. fingers crossed for
me.. I am going for the full time franchisee option i think (when i am
qualified) which will cost me £300 per week but if i do about 35 hours
tuition per week (which where i live is very achievable as an average over
the year) i'll be coming out with about £420 per week for myself before tax
and NI etc. Obviously I will have to pay NI on that (only £5 per week for
self employed apparently) and tax etc..

Good luck,

Thankyou for your reply.

I have fiddled about with the figures on one of the websites. It's my
intention in the next few years to qualify and combine teaching with my
other self employed job.

Have you looked on the IR website? It tells you what to do once you
become self employed and I'm sure the franchise will give you
information too.

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/pdfs/ir56.htm

NI is only £2.10 per week, but beware when Class 4 kicks in. Unlike
our friends, the CSA, it is perfectly fine to pay these by DD.

Good Luck with passing your course and the CSA.

Further to Alison's posting regarding SEE, I would still advise you to
pay Class 2, otherwise you may find yourself short on certain
entitlements later on. It's only a couple of quid per week. Well worth
paying it.
