Hi Martin
It's a community radio station that is regulated by the usual powers,
but the emphasis is on community issues. There is a duty to give all
sides there say, having been unlucky on a number of occasions I have
found that certain groups get lip service where as some get help.
I think it's important to redress the balance and asking questions
can spark debate.
(issues like bank charges, antisocial behaviour, CSA. F4J etc.)
So its run by businessmen, for the community?
I've come across community radio before - can be pretty good if well run,
can create problems if badly run.
Used to catch some great debates on late night radio - CSA has raised its
head many times, good and bad.
About the station.
Wythenshawe used to be the biggest housing estate in Europe, and is
the size of a small town. People in the know have told us that we
have between 35-70 thousand listeners at any given time, (that's
unofficial and just in wythenshawe) The station can be heard over
most of Manchester and somewhat beyond.
Starpline for the station is: Radio by the people for the people.
(real people broadcasting, quality of output can be varied, but
that's not the main issue on community radio.)
The message board was recently re-introduced, and hopefully some well
needed issues are being brought into the light.
Raising awareness on social issues is important...
It certainly is.
Which is sometimes suprising to those who turn a blind eye to social issues.
General consensus I've noticed over the years is that there are 3 broad
groups of people. Those that are affected by a social issue directly, those
who aren't affected by a social issue but champion it for others, and those
who aren't affected by a social issue and will ignore it as much as they
can. Can include official bodies (including local and national governments)
into any of those groups.
Has anyone raised the issue of homelessness in Wythenshawe yet? Used to be
seen as a major problem in many areas but not raised as a social issue in
public in the past decade so much.

If so, WHY
You can have your say on a wider forum...

It's your chance to educate the masses! Linked to a
radio station not controlled by businessmen.
Just out of interest, and may be off topic, if the radio station
isn't controlled by businessmen - then who does control it?
As for the law concerning children - its always been unfair. To a
small degree, its currently unfair to men. To a small degree.
But then you have the courts adding to the problem in a big way -
though the methods of punishment aren't exactly good for the
children either. Martin <><
