Not necessarily a HDD - but some kind of usable internal storage as standard would have been a good idea. 4 or 8Gb of Flash memory would have been cheap even a couple years ago - not prone to mechanical failure, easier to prevent people swapping out, and enough for game saves etc..... then make the bigger external HDD an optional extra.
