What's that free downloadable game that everyone likes?

the only free game is hexic, which is on the hard drive
And where are the
thingies you download to play original Xbox games...?

most of them are already installed on the hard drive, any others you
need will be automatically downloaded when you put in a compatible
xbox game.

None of them are pre-installed on the hard drive, except Halo and the offline Halo 2 stuff. Well, they might be now, but they weren't on launch.

werent they?

couldve sworn MS said the patches were preinstalled on the HD, and any
future ones would be downloadable.

Nope, because they were still finalising the list and getting new ones out before the list was announced well after initial production started. And given how little available hard drive space is available, I don't see it being a wise move voiding 1gb (200 x 5mb) of the space when most people will have about 10 BC games at the most. So far I've only played Pro Evo 5 and it needed a patch downloading, and Halo 2 which needed an updated patch to the pre-installed one downloading, as well as a seperate one as soon as I took it on Live.
