Hmmmmm. My Radeon 9800 Pro pretty much smoked those games (within reason, of
course) - Doom 3, at 800x600, High quality, rarely dropped below 40fps, and
was mostly hovering right around 60fps. Half life 2 at 1024x768 was also
excellent. The only problem I had was a steep drop in frames during the boat
section while 'Reflection detail' was set to All, so I just dropped it to
world. Other than that it was fantastic. I could even pump up to 6x
anti-aliasing and only drop about 8fps.

I guess it depends on the rest of your system (in Half-life 2's case,
anyway)?
