Wtf, no more 60GB PS3?

I completely missed the story released in October that, once stocks of the current 60GB unit have been depleted, only the 40GB unit (with no PS2 compatibility) will be sold in Europe.

What is the logic behind Sony's move? It just goes from bad to worse - does Sony actually *try* to treat the European market with contempt?
