using a second-hand Ethernet Adapter on a PS2

Hi,
I suspect that this question has been asked before, and apologies if
it has.
I need to get an Ethernet Network Expansion pack for an older chunky
PS2, but people keep telling me that I need to buy a brand-new one,
and not a used one.
This seems a bit strange to me. I want to connect the PS2 to my home
network, but am not too interested in connecting to game servers for
netplay, etc...
Is it actually the case that if someone has used the Connection Discs
for netplay that comes with the adapter pack, then these can not be
used again for creating a new account - rather than the physical
ethernet adapater, which I assume should work in any machine.
If anyone could clarify this point, I would really appreciate it.
Rgds
Neil.
