Cant start new PS3

I have just bought a PS3 from the US (120 volt) to use in the UK.
I try to boot up using a 240-120v converter

The first time I try I get a screen coming up showing a graphic of a
gamepad and some text, but then the unit shuts down and leaves me with
a red flashing LED (too quick for me to see exactly what is on
screen).

If I then try to restart it goes straight to flashing red LED before
the startup screen.

If I leave the unit for a few hours, it will start up to show the
startup screen again, but then shuts down again after about 5 seconds
and will then only go stratight to flashing red LED again.
Grateful for some help or explanation of what is going on here.
