that the servers a regionalised was a bit of a blow. I've got a few
american friends from xbox live that also have PS3s and I just can't

Surely that depends on the games? Or do you mean the entire PSN is
regionalised, meaning that you can't even add them as friends?
It depends on the games, the PSN itself is region free. RR7 is
playable against absolutely anyone, but R:FOM and Motorstorm are
locked to your region.
There is supposed to be a patch very soon for R:FOM that allows you to
play globally, but I finished the game so long ago now, I don't know
if I can be arsed to get into it again.
